Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a "nose job," reshapes key anatomical structures that define the nose's appearance. These same structures also support and position glasses. After surgery, the nose will be swollen and sensitive, requiring ample time to heal. Wearing glasses, including sunglasses, too soon can interfere with this healing process.
While you may be thinking to yourself “How long after rhinoplasty can I wear glasses?” the trick to a successful recovery period comes down to allowing enough time between surgery and wearing your glasses. Why? Allowing your nose to heal without any interference minimizes risks for improper healing which can cause long-lasting bumps, scar tissue buildup, or nasal structure misalignment. It ensures your rhinoplasty’s long-term success and integrity along the following:
When can you wear glasses after nose surgery? According to FSIBR’s board-certified, facial plastic surgeons, the recovery period follows three key stages: Initial post-surgery healing (weeks 1-3), the transition recovery period (weeks 3-6), and ongoing rhinoplasty health (weeks 6+).
The first few weeks post-surgery are instrumental in giving your new nasal structure adequate healing time. During this window, areas such as your nose bridge, nasal passage, nostrils, and nose tip will be most susceptible to functional and cosmetic damage if these areas experience stress.
During your first 1-3 weeks post-surgery, it’s advised you do not wear any form of glasses, including prescription lenses and sunglasses. The goal is to ensure minimal contact or weight on your nose bridge. Instead, choose contact lenses, which remain the safest option at this stage.
You may also want to begin exploring buying special head straps for glasses, which load-bear and rest frames upright on your forehead instead of directly on the nasal bridge.
In weeks 3 to 6, the nasal structure should begin to stabilize, and initial swelling should start to subside. However, your cartilage and tissue still remain vulnerable to pressure, affecting your healing and posing a small but meaningful risk to your rhinoplasty’s final corrective shape.
At this stage, the goal is to slowly and gradually re-incorporate wearing lightweight glasses as necessary. Your doctor may suggest a forehead support strap or specialized glasses that don’t rest on the nose bridge. Contact lenses still remain your most reliable alternative, all to maintain the safest, most pressure-free option.
If discomfort or sensitivity persists at this 3-6 week mark, check in immediately with your doctor and keep avoiding wearing glasses.
By week 6, the nasal bones have gained enough stability for most patients to resume wearing glasses, provided their healing is progressing well. However, the nose is still undergoing refinement, and full recovery can take up to 12 months.
Unnecessary pressure on the nasal bridge can be avoided by using special supports, such as tape or a splint. This will prevent glasses from resting directly on your nose. We recommend you consult with your rhinoplasty surgeon on whether your healing has progressed enough for you to wear glasses to ensure no disruption to your recovery and optimal results.
Remember: Your plastic surgeon should provide an overview detailing each of these recovery stages. The recovery timeline helps cover safe activities to return to after rhinoplasty, as well as tips and strategies to help with your comfort when you cannot yet wear your glasses.
Consider any of these additional strategies for wearing glasses safely after rhinoplasty. Always feel empowered to discuss these tips directly with your plastic surgeon, who will offer expert recommendations and adjustments specific to your healing timeline.
